Cabinet Finishing
Finishing is one the most
important feature of a good cabinet or furniture. Some times the one that people
pay most attention looking at a wood furniture. Unfortunately, we have seen
kitchen cabinets well constructed, but when it comes to .
The most important aspects of finishing and different options:
 |
Selection of the
wood specie
- Not every wood is good to be stained or finished in any color. In
general we have seen that in Florida there is a tendency to favor Maple for
cabinet doors and drawers, but in most cases it is not a good wood to be
stained, and for this reason much less used up north in the USA. For example
for very little more, American Cherry gives much better results, color depth,
nicer grains, no blotchiness and richer wood look. The same for other nice
species like walnut, sapele, alder, mahogany and many others.

 |
Multi-Step Finish - There are a
lot of options to make your cabinets unique and stand out, some of these
are...
 |
Two or thee step staining ( dye stain, spray,
rubbing, tonners, shades ) |
 |
Distressing |
 |
Hand hewn & antiquing |
 |
Glaze |
 |
Splatter |
|

 |
Clear coats - Just like on your car, the
clear coat is the one that protects your cabinets from the elements like,
house hold chemicals, water, scratches and ware and tear. Regular lacquer
which is what most cabinet shops use, is a reasonable good product for
furniture but not the best for kitchen cabinets that are much more exposed to
chemicals, ware and constant use. For kitchens and bathrooms we like to use
conversion varnish that is a catalyzed varnish ( 2 parts ) with much higher
content of solids. |
